Bar & Bat Mitzvah

On Becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah

Upon reaching the age of thirteen, boys and girls are expected to assume the religious responsibilities of an adult in the Jewish community by becoming Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah.

Congregation Beth Shalom marks this milestone by having the youth participate in a Shabbat morning service on or after their thirteenth birthday and read from the Torah. Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah are opportunities for a son or a daughter and their entire family to enjoy a major Jewish life cycle experience, involving the family and our congregation in Jewish values by teaching Torah and celebrating together.
